Christ Mayer, a pioneer resident of this city, passed away at the Community Hospital, April 20 at 6:50 p.m. death resulting from an operation for tumor cancer which was performed on Thursday of last week. The deceased had been ailing for the past two years and was taken seriously ill about 10 days ago.
Mr. Mayer was born at Ottawa, Quebec, Canada, April 23, 1851. He would have reached the ripe age of seventy-seven years on Saturday. When he was five years of age, he and his parents moved to the site where St. Paul is now situated. It was there that his father purchased ten acres of land, upon which he farmed for two years. At the end of this time he sold the land for $800 and moved to a farm of 160 acres, which he also purchased, four miles south of Jordan and where he took a homestead. Mr. Mayer resided there until his marriage which took place at St. John's church at Union Hill, February 22, 1876, when he took over part of his father's homestead. He lived there for a few years and later moved into Jordan where he was engaged in business for town for twelve years. They removed to Chaska where they made their home for ten years and again moved to Jordan where they resided for one year, then moving to New Prague, where they have made their home every since which is about thirty-four years. Mr. Mayer was one of the first employees of the International Milling Company. He was retired on pension from this company about four years ago.
Mr. Mayer was a devour Christian, a kind and loving husband and father and an uprighteous citizen. His sad demise is mourned by his loving wife, four daughters, Misses Agnes and Anastacia Mayer of New Prague, Mrs. Frances Huff of Kilkenny and Mrs. Jos. Linn of St. Joe, three sons, Albert Mayer of New Prague, L.H. Mayer of St. Paul and Peter J. Mayer of Minneapolis, fourteen grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Frank Wolf and Mrs. Peter Hilgers of Jordan and Mrs. Teresa Maseline of Minneapolis and two brothers, Leonard Mayer of Shakopee, and Joseph Mayer of Jordan. He was preceded to the grave by one son, Theodore who died thirty-five years ago and one daughter, Mrs. Thos Murphy, nine years ago, one sister Mrs. Theodore Weiland of Shakopee and three brothers, William Mayer of North Yakima, Washington, Clem Mayer of St. Paul and Albert Mayer of Jordan.
The funeral will be held from St. Wenceslaus Church, Saturday, April 23rd at 10 .m. Very Rev. J.K. Cermak will officiate. The pallbearers will be members of the Knights of Columbus Lodge. Burial will be made in the Catholic cemetery. (The list of those who attended was published in the paper April 28, 1927 plus a letter of sympathy from F.A. Bean, International Milling Company)
