Leonard Mayer Rites Held at St. Mark's Church Monday morning
Leonard Mayer
Funeral services for the late Leonard Mayer, 87, a resident of Shakopee, for the past 42 years were conducted by the Very Rev. M. Sava at St. Mark's church at 9 o'clock Monday morning. Burial was in St. John's cemetery, Jordan. The pallbearers were Frank Hilgers, Joe Hilgers, Robert Klick, Charles Ross, Milton Ross and Frank Wolf.
Mr. Mayer succumbed to a prolonged and painful illness at his home at 9:40 last Thursday morning(March 25, 1937). He had been in failing health for the past two years and following the death of his wife Oct 3, 1936, he began to decline rapidly. For the last six weeks of his life he had been confined to his bed, suffering patiently, awaiting his end.
Born in Canada, not far from Buffalo, N.Y. January 6, 1850, Leonard Mayer came with his parents to Minnesota where they settled on a farm near Jordan in 1854. There Mr. Mayer grew to manhood and won recognition as a highly skilled stone mason and plasterer. He assisted in the construction of many of the county's old stone landmarks and several large churches which stand today in evidence of fine work of the builders who created them.
On February 8, 1872 Mr. Mayer was married to Susanna Ruhr in a ceremony performed at Jordan. The couple continued to live there until January 14, 1895 when they moved to Shakopee to spend the remainder of their years.
Of the six children born to Mr. and Mrs. Mayer, four daughters survive; they are Mrs. Bernard Jansen, Mrs. Louisa Lenzmeier, Shakopee; Mrs. H.T. Vierling, Minneapolis; and Mrs. Theresa Hagie, Spring Lake. Two sons Joseph and Frank died in infancy.
Surviving Mrs. Mayer in addition to his daughters are two sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Hilgers, Jordan, Mrs. Theresa Masseline, Minneapolis; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Among the relatives and friends from out of town present at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. H.T. Vierling, Mrs. Theresa Masseline, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ross, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Ross, Minneapolis; Mrs. Gertrude Hilgers, Miss Mary Hilgers, Jordan; Mrs. and Mrs. John Brinkhaus, Mrs. and Mrs. Francis Brinkhaus, Chaska; Mrs. Theresa Hagie, Mr. and Mrs. Joy Neuerhaugen, Spring Lake; Mrs. Christina Lorang, Mrs. James Gibson, St. Paul and George Aufderbaur, Belle Plaine.
