Frances Huff was the oldest daughter of Christian and Catherine (Schoenecker) Mayer. She was born in Scott County, MN, Feb 25,1879. Birth and christening records list the year as 1881. Either way, the day of the month is the same. In February, 1905, she married John P. Huff (Jacobum on certificate) at her hometown of New Prague. After their marriage they lived in Minneapolis. Their children were: Agnes Huff Cummings, Leonard S (Bud) Huff, Rosella and Maria Huff who died in 1912 at the ages 10 months and five years. As her sister Mayme was dying (1918) she asked her to care for her one-year old son Leo Murphy. Separated from her husband, Frances went to the farm near Shieldsville where Leo lived with his father Thomas Murphy, leaving her own children with her parents in New Prague. As related by her oldest daughter Agnes, at about ages eleven and ten, the children took off in the winter to go to the farm where their mother was—they invented the story that their mother had sent for them and they took the train to Kilkenny, as far as it went and then started walking to the farm, pulling a little wagon with their possessions behind them. They were given a ride and from then on lived on the farm too. They grew up as older brother and sister to Leo and Frances was known from then on as "Ma Huff". A kind, gentle person she worked hard to care for the family and was loved by all. She was very deaf, as were at least three of her siblings.
