Martha Chester Faunce, my great grand aunt, was born in Philadelphia on August 19, 1856, to David and Mary A. Franklin Faunce. About 1874, she married John Mood Smith, the son of George Painter and Ann E. Smith. John was born on February 29, 1852, in Philadelphia. John worked as a ship carpenter. Martha worked as a housekeeper. They lived in Philadelphia where they had 13 children. I could only find names for 12; Annie Eliza, Betsy, Georganna, Mary S, John M, Martha S, Katie, Grover Cleveland, George Painter, David Faunce, Dora M, and Herbert. The remaining child had died before 1900.

Martha went in the hospital for a gall bladder operation. During the operation, her gall bladder was perforated. This lead to sepsis which was probably caused by a bacterial infection. She died on March 17, 1914. She was laid to rest in the Palmer Grounds in Philadelphia on March 20, 1914.
