John Mood Smith was born in Philadelphia on February 29, 1852. He was the son of George Painter and Ann E Smith. He married Martha Catharine Faunce about 1874. John worked as a ship carpenter. Martha worked as a housekeeper. They lived in Philadelphia where they had 13 children. I could only find names for 12; Annie Eliza, Betsy, Georganna, Mary S, John M, Martha S, Katie, Grover Cleveland, George Painter, David Faunce, Dora M, and Herbert. The remaining child had died before 1900.

Martha died on March 17, 1914. She was laid to rest in the Palmer Grounds in Philadelphia on March 20, 1914. John lived with his son Herbert and family in 1920 and 1930. John was living at 1211 E. Susquehanna Street in Philadelphia when he died on March 17, 1932. He was buried in the Kensington Burial Ground [Palmer Grounds] on March 20, 1932.
