Mary S. Smith, my 1st cousin 2x removed, is the daughter of John Mood and Martha Catharine Faunce Smith. She was born on November 28, 1879, in Philadelphia. Her baptism took place at the Siloam Methodist Episcopal Church on October 21, 1885.

The 1900, census has her as single, living with her parents at 818 Almond Street, Philadelphia, and employed as a dress maker. She married James B. Gindhart on July 27, 1901, at the Kensington Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia. The minister was Ernie Griffiths.

The 1910, census has her as Mary Gindhart, in her second marriage, and she had a son named Richard Burke who was ten years old. James Gindhart was not living in the same household. The 1920, census had her living at 1325 East Susquehanna Avenue where she was the head of the household. Living with her is her son Richard Burke, her 18 year old married daughter Anna May Burke Palmer, her six month old grandson Richard W. Palmer, her sister Anne Brecht, and her nephew Richard C. Brecht.

In 1930, Mary may have been living and taking care of her granddaughter Dorethea Palmer at Belgrade Street. A family member was told that she moved to the Atlantic City, New Jersey area after 1930. Mary died on August 24, 1945, and was buried in the Palmer Ground. Her burial is identified by a metal marker attached to a fence.
