Alfred S. Cormier, known simply as 'Fred', was born in St-Léonard-Parent, New Brunswick, Canada; and though as an adult he used the middle initial 'S.' (for 'Sévérin'), he had been christened 'Jean-Baptiste Alfred'. Like his an- cestors before him, Fred opted to live the life of a farmer in the small close-knit community where he had been raised — taking over the reins of the family farm when his aging father retired.

Fred was twice married: first in 1912, the day after his twenty-seventh birthday; and again in 1938, after having been unexpectedly wid- owed. With his first wife (Clarina), Fred fath- ered thirteen children, eleven of whom grew to adulthood and married; but in 1936, shortly before their Silver Wedding Anniversary, Clar- ina passed away at age forty-three from com- plications of a late-in-life childbirth. Fourteen months after Clarina's death, at age fifty-two, Fred remarried — to a young woman who was half his age; and together he and she had at least six children.

In 1962, after a two-month stay at the pro-
vincial hospital in Cambellton, New Brunswick, Fred Cormier died of cancer at age seventy- six. He had never ventured far from his home- town roots; but he'd had a full and fruitful life, leaving behind nine sons to perpetuate the family name. At the time of his death, he and his second wife Bibiane had been married for twenty-five years; and he was survived by seventeen children, countless grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his elder brother Ubalde, and his sister Alice (Cormier) Morin. May he rest in peace.
