Flavie Marie (Cormier) Soucy, the eldest child of Sévérin and Léocadie Cormier, was born on the family farm in St-Léonard-Parent; and in accordance with French-Canadian Catholic custom, she was christened 'Marie Flavie'.

In the spring of 1898, just two weeks shy of her seventeenth birthday, Flavie married a twenty-three-year-old bachelor named Éd- mond Soucy — and looked forward, no doubt, to being both a wife and a mother. By sum- mertime, she was in the family way; and on April 30, 1899, she gave birth to a baby girl who was named Alice. The next day, the Sou- cys celebrated their first wedding anniversary and began to adjust to their new life as par- ents; but their joy would be short-lived. By mid-August, their daughter took sick; and two weeks later, on the thirty-first of the month, Alice passed away.

In short time, Flavie was expectant with her second child; and the following year, three days after marking their second anniversary, the couple became the proud parents of yet another daughter — who was given the name Anna. As it turned out, Anna was a healthy child who inherited her father's genes — and lived to the ripe ol' age of ninety-five.

By the spring of 1901, the couple learned that their third child was on the way; but sadly, the year would close on a tragic note. On October 24, Flavie gave birth to a baby boy who was named after his father. His birth, however, was premature and he succumbed the same day. According to documents in the New Brunswick Provincial Archives, Flavie had contracted typhoid fever; and, weakened by complications from childbirth, she died the fol- lowing week.

At the time of her death, Flavie Soucy was just twenty years of age — and she and her husband had been married for less than four years. Although her cemetery monument in- dicates that she passed away on 'October 30, 1902', her death certificate (in the Provincial Archives) and her burial record (in the church register) confirm that she died on 'October 31, 1901'. Repose en paix, Flavie.
