Édmond Joseph Soucy ('Joseph Édmond' in the baptismal register), a son of Joseph and Marie Soucy, was born in St-Léonard-Parent, a rural farming village across the river from Van Bur- en, Maine. One of at least eight children, he grew up on the family farm and never strayed from his roots.

At twenty-three years of age, Édmond pro- posed to a local girl named Flavie Cormier; and in the spring of 1898, he and she exchanged wedding vows at the parish church in Saint- Léonard-Parent. One year later, almost to the day, the Soucys became the proud parents of a baby girl, naming her Alice; but by the end of the summer the infant had taken ill and she died two weeks later.

Heartbroken no doubt, the couple was soon expecting their second child; and on May 4, 1900, Édmond's wife gave birth to another daughter, who was given the name Anna. It was, however, a bittersweet and emotional week as the couple tried to balance the joys and sorrows of life. On April 30, one year ear- lier, their belated daughter Alice had been born; and on May 1, the couple celebrated the occasion of their second wedding anni- versary. On May 2 that year, Édmond's fath- er passed away at age fifty; their daughter Anna was born on the fourth; and they buried Édmond's father on the fifth. Such is the circle of life; but the Soucys surely endured more than most.

Thankfully, their young daughter Anna had been blessed with good health; and by early 1901, Flavie Soucy was once again in the family way. It was the start of a new and hopeful year; but sadly, it would finish on a tragic note. In May of 1901, the couple cel- ebrated another anniversary, Anna's first birthday, and Flavie's twentieth; and as the summer came to a close, they celebrated Édmond's twenty-seventh. Flavie, by then, was well along in her pregnancy; but by mid October she had contracted typhoid. The couple's first son, Joseph Soucy Jr., was born prematurely on October 24 and died shortly after birth while Flavie struggled to overcome the effects of her illness. As fate would have it, however, Flavie succumbed to the disease a week after giving birth; and on November 2, Édmond buried his wife in the parish cemetery.

Soon after Flavie's death, young Anna Soucy went to live with her grandparents, Sévérin and Léocadie Cormier — who raised her to adulthood; and in short time, Édmond began courting a young woman from nearby Siegas. By the following summer, Édmond married for the second time to eighteen-year-old Clara Desjardins. The couple settled in St-Léonard ville, where Clara would eventually give birth to nine children, two of whom would die as infants. Both Soucy and his second wife lived long enough to see the births of many grand- children and great-grandchildren; and when Clara passed away in 1965, they had been wed for nearly sixty-three years.

Édmond Soucy survived Clara by four years and died in 1969 at age ninety-four. A news- paper clipping from that year states that at the time of his death he was the oldest resi- dent in St-Léonard ville, where he had been a farmer and fire warden for many years. He was survived by seven of his twelve children, but his real legacy was the size of the ex- tended family he left behind: 50 grandchildren, 91 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Rest in peace, Édmond. Your memory lives on.
