Basile Martin, Jr. was born on the family farm near the confluence of the St-John and Quisi-
bis Rivers in present-day Ste-Anne-de-Mada-
waska; and he was christened the same day at L'Église de St-Basile, about twelve miles to the north. His paternal grandfather, Simon Martin, had been one of the original Acadien pioneers who settled in the Madawaska region in 1785.

At age twenty-nine, Basile married a young woman whose father owned a farm on the op- posite shore of the Quisibis River; and, not surprisingly, he and she were second cousins, once removed.

At the time of his death in St-Léonard-Parent in 1887, Basile was sixty-five years of age and had been married for thirty-six years. His wid- ow survived him by more than two decades.
