Anastasie Martin was born on her parents' farm near the Quisibis River in present-day Ste-Anne-de-Madawaska, New Brunswick — one of at least ten children. At age eighteen, she married a bachelor named Basile Martin, who was eleven years her senior; and togeth- er the couple had at least ten children of their own.
Widowed at fifty-four, Anastasie eventually moved in with her daughter and son-in-law, Léocadie and Sévérin Cormier — as confirmed by the 1891 census report; but by 1901 she had moved again (though her place of resi- dence is unknown). At the time of her death in 1911, Anastasie was seventy-eight years of age. By then, she was residing in nearby St- André (at the home of one of her sons), al- though records indicate that she passed away in St-Léonard-Parent — suggesting, perhaps, that she had spent her final weeks at the home of her eldest daughter.
