Robert was first married on on January 17 1946 in Anita, Jefferson Co., Pennsylvania to Margaret Katherine Williams Cloer Mitchell Cassiday who is the mother of his son Robert Scott Mitchell, Jr. They divorced.
On July 1, 1957 he married Elsie Irene Barnett who was previously married to Kenneth L. Limrick. Together they raised her three children; Janet, Susan and Kenneth Limrick and their Four children: Mark, Daniel, Paula and Stacey.

Robert S. Mitchell, 83, East Stroudsburg, formerly of Punxsutawney, died Sunday, May 23, 2010, at Pocono Medical Center. He was born Jan. 1, 1927, a son of the late Clarence and Dora (Mauk) Mitchell.
He was married to Elsie Mitchell, who preceded him in death Sept. 23, 2007.
Mr. Mitchell was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church.
He was the owner of the former Mitchell Coal Company and was a coal miner all of his life. He retired from Greenwich Colonies (Collaries) in 1990.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Dan Mitchell and wife Sue of Punxsutawney and Robert Mitchell Jr. of San Diego; two daughters, Paula Shick and husband Allen of East Stroudsburg and Susan McCoy and husband Bob of Punxsutawney; a brother, Elmer Mitchell of Frostburg; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Mark Mitchell; three brothers, Tom, Glen and Fred Mitchell; and six sisters, Irene Houck (Houk), Elsie Houston, Marie Johnston(Johnson), Louise Mitchell Minnick, Caroline Mitchell Reddinger and Marjorie Mitchell Mottern.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2010, at the Hopewell United Methodist Church with Pastor Al Kimmel officiating.
Interment will follow at Hopewell Cemetery.
