Mitchell, of Frostburg, was recently discharged from the U.S. Army with the rank of technician 5th grade, He was inducted into the service March 20 ,1941, and spent over three years in the European theatre of war. T-5 Mitchell took part in the battles of Normandy and Northern France and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal; American Defense Service Medal; Croix de Guerre with Palm; European-African Middle Eastern Service Medal with two bronze stars and one bronze arrowhead.

Elmer Wayne (Beaner) Mitchell, 92, Punxsutawney, died Thursday, July 8, 2010, at Wellington Heights, Punxsutawney. He was born Oct. 18, 1917, in Frostburg, a son of the late Clarence and Dora (Mauk) Mitchell.
In January 1950, he married Gloria (Williams) Mitchell, who preceded him in death Aug. 28, 1976.
Mr. Mitchell was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army in Normandy and Northern France with the 38th Engineer Regiment.
He was retired from Airco Speer Carbon Company in Elk Run, and was also a retired local block layer.
A lifetime resident of the Frostburg area, Mr. Mitchell was a member of the Hopewell United Methodist Church.
Surviving relatives include nine children, Theodore James Mitchell and wife Grace, Elmer Wayne Mitchell Jr. and wife Barbara, Patty Dudek and husband Paul, Wanda Wachob and husband Jake, all of Punxsutawney, Donald Mitchell and wife Sara of DuBois, Edward Mitchell and wife Susan, Pamela Newcome and husband Donald, Daniel Mitchell and wife Mindy and Kenneth Mitchell and wife Melody, all of Punxsutawney; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by six sisters, Elsie Houston, Marie Johnston {Johnson}, Irene Houch {Houk}, Carline Caroline} Reddinger, Louise Minnich {Minnick} and Marge {Marjorie} Mottern; and four brothers, Glenn Mitchell, Thomas Mitchell, Fred Mitchell and Robert Mitchell.
There will be no visitation.
A private family burial will be held at Hopewell Cemetery, Frostburg.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Hopewell United Methodist Church, Frostburg.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney
