Obituary from the "Leader" of Eau Claire, Wisconsin dated 25 Aug 1931:
Mrs. Charles Pettis
Mrs. Charles Pettis, 58, of Fairchild, died at the Sacred Heart hospital here late yesterday following an operation performed at 11 o'clock in the forenoon.
She is survived by ten children, six sons and four daughters.
Hers was the third death in the family within less than two years. A son was accldently shot and killed in a hunting accident about a year and a half ago and four months later, her husband, Charles Pettis died.
All the children were at her bedside except one son, who is at Sheboygan, and a daughter at Los Angeles.
Funeral announcements will be made later.

Obituary:
Mrs. Chas. Pettis
Mrs. Ella Arminda Pettis passed away at 2:50 o'clock Monday afternoon, August 24, 1931, at the Sacred Heart hospital in Eau Claire.
The tragic death of her son George, 18 months ago, came into the home like a thunderbolt out of a clear sky, indirectly causing her husband's death two weeks later and crushing her with sorrow and despair, from which she never hoped to fully rally. Nevertheless, she kept the home together doing all she could for her children, her son's widow and children.
She was apparently quite well last spring, after a fall which broke two ribs, she began ailing and was taken to the Sacred Heart hospital and treated, undergoing an operation and being given blood tranfusions, her sons Carl and Floyd giving their blood for her. She was much better and came home about two months ago. She seemed to be somewhat improved until Sunday, August 23, she was taken violently ill and suffered untold agony until Dr. Winter came and relieved her. She was then taken to the hospital, where everything was done that could be, but the doctors knew thre was no hope as soon as an examination was made. Her children were all at the hospital before she passed away, except Mrs. Marie Volse of Los Angeles, and Harlow of Sheboygan. The latter came a few minutes afterward. The two daughters, Doris Winget and Olive McSorlie, were with their mother to the last.
The community mourns the loss of one whom they can never forget.
Born here in Pettisville on the old homestead, now owned by Alson Babcock, January 16, 1868, she lived through pioneer days with her parents, helped care for the younger children as they came and learned to work and economize. She followed a little footpath through the woods to the Rabenedorf school house where she received an eighth grade education. She was married to Charles W. Pettis of Hampton, Iowa, on March 21, 1886, at Fairchild, Wisconsin, by Justice of Peace M. J. Ingalls, and went with him to his home in Iowa, where they lived a short time. They returned to Pettisville and settled on the farm where they lived up to the time of death. She was a hard worker and a very conservative woman, a kind, self-sacrificing mother, a wonderful mother-in-law, the dearest of grandmothers, a good neighbor and friend. She leaves to mourn her loss, nine children, Edith and Carl, who live together on a farm near Eau Claire; Floyd of Pettisville; Mrs. Marie Volse of Los Angeles, California; Harlow of Sheboygan; Earl of Eau Claire; Mrs. Doris Winget and Mrs. Olive McSorlie, both of Eau Claire, and Juel Dean, who is married and lives on and operates the home farm. She is also survived by five brothers, Charles W. Pettis of Augusta, Ed of Hedgesville, Montana; Louis and Alva of Fairchild, and Walter who lives near Fall Creek; two sisters, Mary Babcock and Eva Chatterson, both of this place; seventeen grandchildren; besides numerous other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Pettis was a member of the R.N.A. lodge at Fairchild, also of the Helping Hand club of her community. She was a member of the M. E. church of Fairchild and leaves a consoling thought for her children in the fact that she made it known that she felt prepared and ready and willing to go whenever God willed it so.
Funeral services were held from the home at 2 o'clock and from the church at 2:30, Thursday afternoon, August 27, Rev. C. H. Brown officiating. Amid a mass of beautiful and fragrant flowers, gifts of love and sympathy, she was laid to rest beside her husband and son in the Fairchild cemetery.
Those from out of town who attended the funeral, were: Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Schufer of Bellingham, Wash.; Mrs. F. M. Spenser of Missoula, Montana; Mr. and Mrs. Hyslop and Hazel (nee Livermore) of Havre, Montana; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Pettis and family of Spring Valley; Mr. and Mrs. Walker Livermore and family of Augusta.
"Precious mother, she has left us,
Left us, yes forever more,
But we home to meet our loved one
On that bright and happy shore.
Lonely the house and sad the hours
Since our dear one has gone,
But, oh! a brighter home than ours
In Heaven is now her own."
