Charles Pettis,
Fairchild, Seeks
Assembly Seat
Charles Pettis, of Fairchild, yesterday announced his candidacy for assemblyman from the 10th district to succeed Chris Saugen, on an independent ticket.
Mr. Pettis has been a resident of Eau Claire county for 40 years and for half of that time was a member of the county board. He has for 30 years been active in public service in the town of Fairchild, and was for six years a member of the county Road and Bridge committee.

Obituary:
Old Pioneer succumbs to heart failure after the shock of son's tragic death
Charles Wilford Pettis was born at North Horwith, New York, April 27, 1854, and passed away early Sunday morning while peacefully sleeping in his bed at home, December 15, 1929. His wife was beside him when he passed away. His heart had been weak for several years and the shock he received when his son, George, was killed two weeks ago, was more than he could stand.
His early life was spent in Iowa. On March 21, 1888, he was united in marriage to Ella Arminda Pettis at Fairchild. Ten children were born to them, six boys: George, Carl, Floyd, Harlow, Earl, and Jueldean; four girls: Edith, Marie, Doris and Olive. George preceded his father to the grave two weeks before. Besides his wife and nine children, he leaves to mourn his loss, 16 grandchildren, all of whom he dearly loved and who, in return, loved their grandfather.
Charlie was a well read man, with a good education and years of experience. He loved to delve into political adventures and he like nothing better than a good interesting debate. In 1896, he was elected assessor for the town of Fairchild and served two years. He was school clerk in the Rabensdorf school district for several years; served as town clerk two years and was chairman of the town of Fairchild 20 years. He served on the road and bridge committee of Eau Claire county several years. He had been a member of the Modern Woodmen for over 30 years. All of his sons were members, of which he was justly proud. The funeral activities were held at the M.E. church, Friday afternoon, December 20, the Rev. Charles Brown, pastor of the church, officiating.
