Emma Alberta Vandeveer was born July 13, 1887 at Table Rock, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Joseph Long Vandeveer and Margaret Jane Ware Vandeveer. A handwritten note by Margaret's sister, Melissa Ware Leonhard, states that she was present at the time of Emma's birth. Shortly after Emma's birth, the family moved to Pine Summit (south of Chadron), Dawes County, Nebraska.
Emma's mother died on May 11, 1893 at Pine Summit as a result of childbirth. Emma was then sent to Severance, Doniphan County, Kansas to live with her grandparents, John A.J. & Rachel Ann Ware. She is found in the 1895 Kansas State Census as Vandever, Berta. Her brother, Arthur, continued to live with their father. Emma's father remarried and had one surviving child, Howard Milton Vandeveer.
In 1900, Emma is living in Leona, Doniphan County, Kansas with Melissa Vianna Ware Leonhard and her husband, Penrose Milton Leonhard. She is listed as a "ward" in the 1900 U.S. Census.
On August 16, 1905, Emma married Frederick Christian Knecht at Hiawatha, Kansas. Together they had six children: Arthur, Vera, Marie, Lloyd, Floyd and Frederick F. The first five children were born on their grandfather's (Christian Knecht, Jr.) farm one mile west of Leona in Robinson Township, Brown County, Kansas. Frederick F. was born at Leona.
From 1905 until 1930, Emma and her husband made several moves from the farm to Leona and from Leona to the farm. Christian Knecht, Jr. sold the farm in 1918 but Frederick Christian apparently leased a portion of the original farm from his sister and her husband.
Emma and Frederick moved to Detroit, Michigan in late 1940 or early 1941 and remained there until about 1946 before returning to Leona after WWII. Emma spent the rest of her life in Leona, Kansas.
Emma died on January 1, 1965 at the Sunshine Haven Nursing Home in Hiawatha, Kansas. She is buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, north of Leona, Kansas.
