As a young man, Jiggs was engaged in farming in the Leona, Ks. area. During WWII, he joined the army where he became a cook and served food to his fellow soldiers on the front lines in Italy. Jiggs served with the 5th Army, and was in combat 555 days. The battle of and for Italy lasted 603 days, the longest of any unit in U.S. Army history. Upon his discharge from the army,he returned to Leona and continued farming until he got a job with the county, operating a road grader which he did for several years. His experience as a cook served him well as he helped prepare many delicious meals for the Leona Sportsman Club. Over the years Jiggs served his community as city mayor and councilman.
Jiggs married May Ellavene Johnson on September 24, 1960 at the Christian Church in Hiawatha, Ks. Jiggs is survived by his wife, May Ellavene, a brother "Fritz" [Frederick Franklin Knecht] of Troy, Ks. and two step sons, Dennis Ptomey of Gardner, Ks, and Tom Ptomey of Shawnee, Ks. He is also survived by three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Lloyd and Floyd and two sisters, Vera and Marie Luoma of Atchison.
Funeral services will be Tuesday June 5, 2001 2:00 p.m. at the Highland Mortuary in Highland, Ks. Sam Blythe will be officiating the service. Mr. Knecht will lie in state after 9:00 a.m. on Monday June 4, 2001 at the Highland Mortuary. The family will greet friends from 7-8 p.m. on Monday evening. The Arthur Knecht memorial fund has been established and will be designated later by the family and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
