Melvin A. Verkuilen, age 75, Wittenberg, died Friday, January 2, 1980 at Wausau Hospital.

He was born June 21, 1905 in the town of Norrie, the son of the late Martin and Mary (Hoks) Verkuilen.

On November 29, 1930 Melvin was united in marriage to Helen Spitzer in Wausau. She survives.

In addition to his wife, survivors include four sons, Darrelle and Melvin (Dolores), both of Neenah, Ronald and Michael, both of Wittenberg; one daughter, Darlene (Terrance) Fields, Oshkosh; two brothers, Elmer (Genevieve) Hatley and Henry, Appleton; two sisters, Marie Breske, Eland and Irma Radke, Wausau; 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Gene, one granddaughter, Diane, five brothers, including Leslie and Edward, three sisters, Rose Schrieber, Agnes VanderKooy and Cecelia Ploeger.

Funeral services were held January 5, 1980 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wittenberg. The Rev. Richard Borchers officiated. Interment was in Forest Home Cemetery, Wittenberg.
