George's parents Jefferson and Alice Meekins, Sr. were raising their eight year old granddaughter Theresa Meekins-Braxton "Tee" after the sudden death of her mother Lillian Meekins-Braxton. Shortly after George and his wife Elizabeth stepped in to help continue raising their niece Tee who was the only child of his sister Lillian so they took Tee to their home in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania to live with them.
George and Elizabeth Meekins had no children.
