༺⊰❁ Alice Roosevelt Powell Steinberger was the daughter of William Hon and Cora (Heare) Powell, born on August 28, 1903 in Selma, Ohio where she lived during her younger years. She was petite, hard working, and good in business.
Ralph Irvin Steinberger was the childhood sweetheart and true love of Alice. They married on November 29, 1924 in Springfield, Ohio by Rev. C. D. Munsey, clergyman of Central Methodist E. Church, at the minister's home. Witnesses: Cecile Young (Alice's friend), Glen Derr (Ralph's cousin), Warren R. Shuirr (Ralph's Aunt Clara's husband).
Ralph and Alice settled in Springfield, Ohio. Together they had three children.
Known children of Ralph and Alice (Powell) Steinberger:
1) John "Jack" William Steinberger, born October 3, 1925 in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio;
2) Joanne Steinberger, born July 29, 1926 in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio; death: January 7, 1990 Houston, Harris County, Texas; and
3) Meriel Anna Steinberger, born August 1, 1930 in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio.
Their children were born at home and Ralph delivered all three children before the arrival of the attending physician, Dr. William B. Quinn.
In 1934 Grandpa Ralph and Grandma Alice purchased a farm in South Vianna, Ohio, and soon the family moved to their new home where they no longer would go hungry. Grandma Alice was always busy caring for her family, making most of their clothing, cooking, baking, tending the garden, canning food, making root beer, hauling water, and keeping a spotless, clean home. It was here on the farm the family flourished. During the harvest season the men would gather to bring in the harvest and Grandma Alice always cooked wonderful meals for them. One of the men bragged on her cooking saying his plate just wasn't large enough, so the next year and each year thereafter he was given a platter to eat from instead of a dinner plate. Everyone got a laugh over it. My Grandma Alice was an excellent cook. She made the best soft rising bread ever that she would slice and smother with melted butter. Her deserts were always spectacular and often served with homemade ice cream.
In 1947-48 Grandpa Ralph and Grandma Alice purchased property along Lake Milakokia in Gould City, Michigan. The family moved to their new property and soon began building their resort, Berger Resort, with the help of Wilford LaLund. It was located along the area of Beaver Bay on the lake. It wasn't long before a family of beavers also settled in whom everyone fell in love with, so it seemed appropriate to change the resort's name to Beaver Bay Resort. There were always chipmunks and squirrels scampering about, the occasional visits from the otters, many raids from raccoons, and prowlings from bears and panthers.
The cabins were always full during the summer months, and during the cold months there were the occasional ice fishermen and hunters. Grandma Alice kept the books, was responsible for the reservations, always busy cleaning, cooking and baking. Everyone always looked forward to the resort's weekly fish fry they gave for the vacationers to get some of Grandma's delicious food.
In the early 1970's they began to think of their retirement and built a ranch home next to the resort. Before they could move in Alice's beloved Ralph was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. My Grandma Alice nursed my Grandpa Ralph to the end, never once complaining, because she loved him dearly.
After Grandpa Ralph passed on Grandma Alice moved into the ranch home in the fall of 1973. She soon sold the resort to Lawrence and Shirley Slack, who had one daughter and four sons. During the week of my Grandpa Ralph's birthday in July of 1975 the family gathered one last time on Milakokia Lake. The day of my Grandpa's birthday we visited his grave site, went up along Lake Superior, and over to the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie. It was this day we saw the SS Edmund Fitzgerald. From there we returned to my Grandma Alice's home. That evening the moon was full and beautiful in the sky and I sat out on one of the double chairs made by my Grandpa. The lake sparkled as if diamonds of white liquid fire had been scattered down from heaven across the night black rippling waters of Lake Milakokia, and above in the midnight blue sky sailed a full pale moon so large and round. The moon seemed to almost touch the trees and dip down into the lake for a summer's night swim in the waters. It seemed like a gift from my Grandpa and a beautiful end to a wonderful time in a land of dreams called the Beaver Bay Resort...
In the fall of 1975 my Grandma Alice moved to live with her daughter Joanne in Houston, Texas. When Joanne passed away in 1990 Grandma moved to Brighton, Michigan to live near her son, my Uncle Jack, her eldest child and only son.

On 12/13/1992 Grandma Alice passed away from old age in Milford, Oakland County, Micigan. She was the last of her siblings to pass on. Grandma Alice was buried next to her beloved and is still loved and missed by many. Rest in God's peace and love.

The cabins which were once the Beaver Bay Resort are now individually owned.
