General (Buddy) Byrd, 82, of Elgin, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 1987. He was the son of the late Sherman and Rosetta Welch Byrd and was also preceded in death by his first wife, Hattie L. Byrd; one son, Maynard; an infant daughter; two brothers: Elvin and Joe Byrd; and two sisters: Mary and Tilda. He was a member of the Concord Baptist Church.

Mr. Byrd is survived by his wife, Carrie Leona Foster Byrd; five sons: Wiley Byrd of Amherst, O., Leon Byrd of Capital Hill, Kenneth Byrd of Frankfort, Germany, Earl Moore of Helenwood, and Jimmy Byrd of Helenwood; four daughters: Ruth Simpson of Dayton, O., Jane Hensley of Knoxville, Joyce Bailey of Elgin, and Beulah Newport of Lewisburg, O.; twenty-one grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; two brothers: Williard and Milford Byrd; three sisters: Ollie Byrd, Lennie Cochran, and Ada Goad, all of Elgin; several nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 23, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Jones and Son Funeral Home, with Rev. Ray Howard officiating. Special music was provided by Phillip and Kim Kidd. Burial was in the Concord Cemetery at Robbins. Jones and Son Funeral Home in Oneida was in charge of arrangements. (Source: The Scott County News, 28 May 1987, p6)
