DANIEL W. STRICKLER, SR.

CHURCHVILLE -- Daniel Walker Strickler Sr., 67 died unexpectedly at 8:45 a.m., Friday, (May 13, 1966) at his home on Star Route, Churchville.

The son of James Frank and Sally Swisher Strickler, he was born Feb. 17, 1899 in Rockbridge County, and had lived most of his life in Augusta County.

Mr. Strickler was a church lay leader, a board member and steward of the West Augusta Methodist Church, a board member of the Deerfield Ruritan Club, and a director of the Deerfield Telephone Company. On Feb. 26, 1966 he retired with 21 years of service as forest warden of the George Washington National Forest.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Florence Hawpe Strickler; a daughter, Mrs. Hugh (Dorothy) Leach, West Augusta; six sons, Daniel Walker Strickler Jr., and Guy Franklin Strickler, both of Churchville, Fred Monroe Strickler, West Augusta, James Frank Strickler, Harrisonburg, serving with the Navy, Charles Edward Strickler, Staunton, and Ray Hawpe Strickler, Deerfield; two sisters, Mrs. Mitch (Antha) Swisher, and Mrs. Gene (Genevieve) Kesterson, both of Greenville; six brothers, Leonard Strickler, Mt. Sidney, Floyd Strickler, John Strickler and Boyd Strickler, all of Greenville. Albert Strickler, Dyer, Ind., and Walter Strickler, Waynesboro, and 20 grandchildren. A son, Dwight Calvin Strickler, died in France in World War II.

A funeral service will be held Monday morning at eleven o'clock in the chapel of the Bear Funeral Home in Churchville, conducted by the Rev. Arthur Wingfield. Burial will be in Thornrose Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Ben Michael, Harlan Shinaberry, Alvin Shinaberry, Guy Hamilton, John Hamilton and Fred Argenbright.

Honorary: Van Simmons, Harvey Eckard, Henry Jarvis, Mike Armstrong, Rias Losh, Walter Allman, Clint Dorsey, Lacy Link and members of the Deerfield Ruritan Club.

Friends will be received at the residence.
