Fred Monroe Strickler, Sr. ,73, of Rt. 1 Box 35C, died Sunday (December 21, 2003) in Alleghany Regional Hospital. Born May 19, 1930 in Greenville, he was a son of Daniel Walker and Florence (Hawpe) Strickler. Prior to retirement, he was employed as a game refuge supervisor of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries for 32 years. He was a member of West Augusta United methodist Church. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, D.W. and Dwight Strickler. Surviving are five children, Fred Strickler, Jr. of West Augusta, Dwight M. Strickler and wife Caroline of Fairfax, Juanita Simmons and husband Van, Jr. of West Augusta, Sue S. DeVore of Savannah, Ga. and Alicia K. Elkins and husband, Richard of Concord; a sister, Dorothy L. Fultz and husband Bud of West Augusta; three brothers, Guy F. Strickler and wife Isabelle of Churchville; J. Frank Strickler of Broadway, and Ray H. Strickler and wife Judy of West Augusta, eight grandchildren, Keith Simmons and wife Erin, Brian Strickler, Robbie Elkins, Nikki Elkins, Tammy Mathews, Vickie Freilich and husband James, Beth Morgan and husband Junior, and Stephanie Strickler; seven great-grandchildren, Melinda, Ryan, Taylor and Logan Mathews, Adam Simmons, Will Freilich, and Zachary Strickler, and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Strickler is also survived by his friend and companion, Lois Wells of Millboro and her family, Sharon, James and Eli Hiner, Jay, Theresa, Josh and Matthew Purdue, and Doug, Christie, Lucas and Gabe Wells.
