D. W. STRICKLER, JR.

Son of Daniel W. and Florence (Hawpe) Strickler, he married Ophelia Blackwell who survived him. During WW II he served as an S1 in the US Navy. Following the war he was employed by Smith's Tranfer Corp. and then as a state inspector for the Virginia Dept. of Tranportation until his retirement. He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church.

He was founder and president of the Churchville Hoseshoe Club and a member of the Crozet and Grottoes horseshoe clubs. He had been a member of the National Horseshoe Pitching Assoc. for 25 years and was recipient of the NHPA Presidential Award. In 1993 he was inducted into the Virginia Hall Of Fame.

He was survived by three sons, Calvin W. of Churchville, Mark A. of Staunton, and Kevin R. of Mount Solon, as well as two daughters, Ann M. Sarver of Verona nd Kathleen M. Roudabush of Elkton; a step-son Harvey Blackwell of Churchville; a step-daughter, Kay Kingsberry of Albany, OR; five brothers, Guy F. of Churchville, Fred M. of Millboro, Frank of Broadway, Charles E. of Staunton, and Ray H. Strickler of West Augusta; one sister, Dorothy Fultz of West Augusta; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He died at Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville, VA. A service was conducted at Thornrose Cemetery by the Rev. Clemmer E. Matheny. Pall bearers were Kenny Hall, Jerry Roberts, Ray Staton, Bobby Hoover, Harvey Sprouse, Denny Davis, and Clyde Eavey. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Churchville, Crozet, and Grottoes horseshoe clubs.
