Sarah was the daughter of Joseph and Indiana (Tatman) Smith. She was born in Tippecanoe Co., IN, but moved with her family to Clermont Co. OH before 1850. Her mother died about 1852, and Sarah moved with her father back to Tippecanoe Co., IN

Sarah and Jesse Oshel, son of John Oshell and Margaret Chambers, obtained a marriage license on 16 Feb 1858 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. They were married a few days later on 18 Feb 1858 in Lafayette, Indiana in Tippecanoe County. Sarah and Jesse moved to Kansas in the fall of 1876 and settled near Neosho Falls. They also lived for a time near Garnett and near Blue Mound.

Sarah and Jesse had 15 Children; Alice M, Catherine Ophelia, John Henry, Jessie May, George Elmer, Jennie Evaline, Mary, Albert J, William, Lydia Viola, Ida Cenora, Olive Aldora, Pearl Emma Ellen, Lillian Florence, and Emmett Cleveland). Unfortunately, Catherine passed away at 6 years and Jessie, Mary, and William passed away as infants.
