The remains of Staff Sargeant Granger will arrive under military escort on the noon train on Tuesday and will remain at the home of his mother until the funeral.
Staff Sargeant Granger, killed in action over Italy on March 20, 1945. His body was not recovered and returned home until 1949.
He was a Newport resident for 18 years. He was born in Highgate, VT on March 23, 1918.
He was educated in Newport schools.
By occupation, he was a machinist in Athol, MA. from which place he enlisted in the U S Air Forces on August 4, 1942. He was killed while flying with a bombing mission over Italy. He was an enlisted bombadier.
He was awarded the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart, the Presidential Unit Citation, the European Theatre Ribbon, and the American Theatre Ribbon in addition to the Good Conduct Medal.
Staff Sargeant Granger served in North Africa, Tunisia, Italy, and Sicily. At the time of his death, he was based in Corsica.
He is survived by his mother; eight sisters Armande in VT, Gabrielle and Cecile in Claremont, Beatrice in Salem, OR, Dolores in MA, and Hazel, Rita and Mary in Newport; three brothers John in Newport, Leonard of Claremont currently in the U S Army, and Paul in Salem, OR.
A brother Albert was killed in action while a crew member of a torpedo bomber on the USS Cabot off Leyte Island.
Burial is in St Patrick's Cemetery.
