ROBERT MATTESON DIES SUDDENLY AT CALLAWAY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
Robert Matteson died suddenly Saturday, July 3, at the Callaway Memorial Hospital.
Services were held July 6th at the Pleasant Hill Church, northwest of Portland with the Rev. Charles Holbrook, of New Bloomfield officiating. Burial was in the Church Cemetery.
Robert Walter Matteson was born February 18, 1885, on a farm west of Portland, Mo., a son of Asa Alonza and Hermena Illig Matteson. He lived his entire life in Callaway County near where he was born. He retired about two years ago and moved to Fulton. Although Bob lived on a farm during his life and did some farming, this was not his life's work. He was a carpenter and there are many buildings in the neighborhood that he built. He also was a concrete worker and helped to build many concrete bridges in this section of the state.
Mr. Matteson had a heart attack in April and was in the hospital several weeks, but he had been home for about five weeks and was feeling well enough, he thought, to come with his son, Robert, to Independence to visit his daughter. They were ready to start when he became suddenly ill. He was rushed to the hospital where he died in the emergency room.
He is survived by five sons, Elvin, of Fulton, and with whom he made his home after he retired, Henry, of New Bloomfield, Robert Lee, of Florissant, Eugene, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Harold, of Jefferson City; three daughters, Mrs. Ophelia Pryer, of Independence, Mrs. Gertrude Shoaf, Fulton, and Mrs. Dorothy Lederle, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; five brothers, John, St. Peters, Mo., Arthur, Mokane, Paul, Portland, Francis, Fulton, and Russell, Alton, Ill.; six sisters, Mrs. Viola Moore, Kansas City, Mrs. Ethel Stewart, Lawson, Mrs. Belle Garriott, Fulton, Mrs. Eunice Dewey, DeSoto, Mrs. Mae Werner, St. Louis, and Mrs. Mabel VanKirk, Warrenton; 29 grandchildren; one great grand daughter, and a number of nieces and nephews.
