John was a farmer and carpenter.
In May 1842, he married Christina Somerville (b. 1818).
In 1850 he lived in Lanark, Con 6 Lot 15. He was in Middleton in 1858, and in 1874 had the Crown Patent for Bruce City, 2nd ½ of lot 19, Con 10.
From the Atlas of Bruce 1880, p.74, he's a farmer, owned 100 acres, con 10, lot 19, Post Office Gresham.
In the 1871 Census, John is 53, a Presbyterian Carpenter. Nine children are listed, with birth years. His son 4/4/1 John, age 28, b. 1843 is listed as a carpenter also.
