In 1820, coming from Scotland to Canada, the journey seems to have taken the family about six weeks. Rations per week for every passenger of eight years and upwards calculated for a passage of 84 days. One and half pounds of beef or port; 5 ½ pounds of biscuits; 5 ½ pounds of oatmeal; ¾ pound of barley or peas; ½ pound of butter; ½ pound of molasses; Children from 2-8 years two-thirds of the above quantity- under two years of age was left to the care of their parents who must pay in porter, tea, coffee, sugar, etc for the mothers and infants.
In the Gulf of St Lawrence, "On the ship Brock or 'Broke,' James, a boy of about four years, fell overboard. He was wearing a stiff heavy woolen skirt which kept him floating until a boat rescued him." Cp3
About 1844 James bought his father John's farm in Lanark.W ½ Lot 16, Con 4, issued 1861. Also the W ½ of Lot 13, 5 as a Queens Grant.
He farmed in Horton Township of Renfrew county. (Tom)
