Adams was a Civil War veteran. He served from Nov. 3, 1862 to July 27, 1863, in Co. E of the 178th PA drafted Infantry. On Aug. 24, 1864, he enlisted for one year in Batt. C Independent Pa. Light Artillery and served until he was transferred by Special Order No. 2 dated Jan. 3, 1865, to Battery I, 5th PA Heavy ART (205th Regiment Pa. Volunteers), where he served until June 13, 1865. This service record matches that of his brother Isaac.

He was described as having black hair, a florid complexion, 5’ 4-3/4" He died of consumption (Lititz Record, Mar. 28, 1890) and was cremated, and the ashes were buried at the county's expense as an honorably discharged veteran.
