"COUPLE FOUND DEAD OF GAS IN BUNGALOW.
Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Adams Victims of Coal Fumes Near Lititz.
BLAME KITCHEN STOVE.
Granddaughter Discovers Tragedy In New Home Occupied 3 Days.

Coal gas snuffed out the lives of an elderly couple in their bungalow near Lititz on Sunday. They were found dead at 7 a. m. by a granddaughter who went to their home to awaken them.
The victims were Samuel Adams, sixty-eight, and his wife Katie Webber Adams, sixty-five, of Lititz R. D. 5, near the Hammer Creek church.
Dr. M. H. Yoder, deputy coroner of Lititz, made an investigation and issued a verdict of asphyxiation by coal gas. He said it was accidental.
HOME WAS YULE GIFT.
The bungalow, a Christmas gift from their son, Alvin, of Lititz, only became occupied by the couple three days ago. They resided in Newmanstown, Lebanon county, before moving into the house. They also lived in Ephrata some years ago.
Dr. Yoder said the fumes were thrown off by a second-handed kitchen stove which may have been defective.
Dr. Yoder said he learned that Catherine Adams, thirteen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Adams, whose home is nearby, went to the bungalow to awaken her grandparents. She tried to open a door but found it locked. Looking in through a window she saw her grandmother lying on the kitchen floor.
RETURNS FOR HELP.
She returned to her home and notified her father. Mr. Adams and his son, Harold, fifteen, went back to the bungalow and tried to force the door open but were unsuccessful. The son then crawled into the house through a ventilator on the roof. He opened the doors.
They found Mr. Adams lying in bed. Mrs. Adams is believed to have arose from bed and collapsed as she went to open a door as the fumes sickened her. Dr. Yoder said the couple had been dead for several hours.
Mr. Adams, the son, told Dr. Yoder that he had visited his parents around 10 p. m. Saturday and everything seemed to be all right then.
Mr. Adams was a former cigarmaker and was well-known in the vicinity of Ephrata and Rothsville.
The following children survive: William and John, of Ephrata; Viola, wife of Harry Knauer, Sheridan, R. D.; Alvin, Lititz, R. D. 5; Ira, of Berkshire Heights, Reading; Harry, Coatesville; and Stella, wife of John Groff, Lititz. Twenty-two grandchildren also survive.
Mr. Adams is also survived by a brother, John, Ephrata, while Mrs. Adams is survived by her mother, Mrs. Caroline Webber, Lititz: and these brothers and sisters: Edwin, Centerville; Minnie, wife of William Engle, Lititz; Dora, wife of Charles Shaub, Neffsville; Charles, Lancaster; and Ella, wife of John Gneier, Elstonville.
Services for the couple will be held at 1:30 p. m. Wednesday from the Brethren church, Ephrata, with interment in the Rothsville cemetery."
