A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster August 22, 1864, as a private with Independent Battery C Pennsylvania Light Artillery. On January 12, 1865, he transferred to Battery I, 5th Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery (204th Pa), and honorably discharged with the battery June 30, 1865.
In 1870, he was living with his family in Juniata County, but by two years later had returned to Lancaster County where he apparently remained until his death.

Samuel was married first, on March 4, 1850, to Catherine Gable and soon thereafter divorced. He is a Civil War veteran, having served from Aug. 22, 1864 to June 13, 1865 in Co. I of the 5th Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery.

"Samuel Adams, an aged resident of Millport, died on Sunday and was buried on Wednesday at the Rothsville Lutheran cemetery. He was a brother to Jacob and Isaac Adams of this place, the only two surviving ones of a family of thirteen children. Revs. H. C. Lilly and G. W. Haogen officiated."
