Nelis DeReus came to America, sailing from London and arriving at the Port of New York on the 'Yorktown,' on May 15, 1850. He came with his parents, Arie DeReus and Magchelhje Van Der Kreek and his three older brothers, Arie, Pieter and Marinus. Nelis was four years old.

Nelis was a farmer throughout his life. He was first married to Jannigje Tol, daughter of Aard Tol, on May 15, 1869. She died, probably in childbirth, on March 26, 1871. She is buried at Graceland Cemetery north of Pella, Iowa.

He was next married to Elizabeth Boshuis [or Boshuizen], daughter of Jan Willem and Theresa Julia (Roghair) Boshuis, on November 2, 1876. They had three daughters: Maggie [1877]; Theresa Julia [1878]; and Nellie [1879]. Elizabeth died on February 24, 1881.

Nelis then married Francoise Van Hoeve on October 8, 1884. Francoise had come to America in 1882 and had worked for Nelis keeping house and helping to take care of two of the three little motherless girls (Nellie went to live with her maternal grandmother). They eventually had 7 children together: Marie, Arie N., Barbara, Peter N., Frances, Wilhelmina and Elizabeth Jane.
