Jannigje "Jane" Tol was born to Aart Tol and Neesje de Jong. She was, as far as can be known now, the youngest of eleven children. A birth record* found at WieWasWie.nl indicates she was born at Sint Anthoniepolder. Her older siblings were: Anna [died young], Izaac, Anna, Jan, Arie [died young], Arie, Kaatje [died young], Dirk, Jacob [died young], and Catharijna.

She arrived in the U.S. on May 2, 1856 on the Ocean Home through the Port of New Orleans. She was only 7 years old and the ship manifest shows that she traveled in steerage with her father Aart and three siblings: Anna, Catharine and Dirk. They settled in Lake Praire township, in Marion County (near the Dutch community of Pella), Iowa.

The 1856 census, page 502, enumerated on July 7th, shows her living with her family in Pella: Aart, 55; Anna, 25; Catharine, 15; Dirk, 10 and Jennigje, 9; and an older brother, Isaac, age 27.

Jane married Nelis De Reus, son of Arie and Magcheltje (Van Der Kreek) De Reus on May 15, 1869. It is presumed that she probably died in childbirth. The year on the stone is difficult to read, but looks like 1871. This seems reasonable as she is listed in the Marion County, Iowa July 1870 census as being 23 years of age. History from family members supports the presumption that both she and a baby died upon its birth.

*Nationaal Archief, Dordrecht, record #37
