Marie was the first of seven children born to Nelis De Reus and his 3rd wife Francoise Van Hoeve. Her siblings: Arie N., Barbara, Peter N., Frances, Wilhelmina and Elizabeth Jane. She had three older half-siblings: Maggie, Theresa Julia and Nellie.
On 3 Mar 1914 in Pella, Marie married Engle Van Steenis, son of William and Altje (Vander Ploeg) Van Steenis. They had three children: Raymond C., Merle W. and Norma F.

Van Steenis, Route 2, Pella; three sisters, Mrs. Bert (Nell) Olivier, Pipestone, Minn., Mrs. Jacob (Barbara) Van Dyke, Forth Worth, Texas, and Mrs. Elizabeth Stek, 615 University St., one brother, Arie De Reus, Pella; nine grandchildren; and non great-grandchildren.
