Elizabeth was the daughter of Willem and Theresa Julia (Roghair) Boshuizen (also Boshuis). She had at least one sibling, an older sister named Theresa Julia born in 1849. Her father died sometime before they emmigrated in about 1868 though some records indicate he died in 1873.

On 2 Nov 1876, Elizabeth married Nelis DeReus, son of Arie and Magcheltje (Van Der Kreek) DeReus in Pella, Iowa. He was also a Dutch immigrant who had arrived in America in 1850. Together they had three daughters: Maggie, born in 1877; Theresa Julia, born in 1878; and Nellie, born in 1879. Elizabeth died 15 months after giving birth to Nellie. The cause unknown at this time.

Young Nellie, went to live with Elizabeth's mother, Therese Julie Roghair Van Essen and was ultimately raised by her. Elizabeth's husband, Nelis, remarried 3-1/2 years later.

She is most likely buried at Oak Wood in Pella but currently working on confirming a burial location her.
