Audrey E. Neal Smith, 101, of Benton died at 11:15pm, Monday, May 9, 2005 at Helia Healthcare, Benton. Funeral services will be held at 11am Saturday, May 14, at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Cooper Officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery, Benton. Visitation will be from 6 to 9pm Friday at the funeral home. Mrs. Smith was born Oct. 19, 1903 in Franklin County, the daughter of Thomas Jefferson Stites and Lillie Jane Vancleve Stites. She married Earl Neal and he preceded her in death on March 7, 1955. She later married Evan Smith in 1964 and he preceded her in death in 1977. She was a homemaker and an active member of the East Benton Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for several years. She served as a volunteer at the Franklin Hospital where she was an assistant to the chaplain for over thirty years. She was a member of the Akin Eastern Star.
She is survived by two sons, Arthur and wife Fay Neal of Benton, and Frank and wife Delores Neal of Norris City; two daughters, Loyeszelle and husband Jiggs Whalen of Metropolis and Mildred Smith of Orlando, Fl; three stepdaughters, 16 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, husbands; a son, Eugene Neal; a stepdaughter, Shirley Baker; two brothers, Frank and William Stites; a half brother, Ido Burns, and three half sisters, Grace Browning, Gertie Lawrence and Bessie Williams. Memorial contributions may be made to the East Benton Baptist Church and will be accepted at the funeral home.
