Obituary for Tom Jones (1905-1983)
Ex-Police Chief Thomas Jones dies; held position 7 years
Former Minneapolis Police Chief Thomas R. Jones. 78, who held the job longer than anyone else, died Sunday, December 18, 1983 in Cape Coral, Florida.
He resigned in 1956 after seven years in the job to become chairman of the Minnesota parole board. Until the system was changed in late 1979 to provide fixed tenure, the police
chief served at the pleasure of the mayor, and turnover tended to be frequent.
Jones was appointed chief by Mayor Eric Hoyer on June 10, 1949, the day that Chief Glenn MacLean and his top aides resigned en masse following a political squabble with Hoyer. Jones had been among those who resigned. He had joined the police department in 1936.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 22nd in Werness Brothers Funeral Chapel, 50th St. and Beard Avenue South. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Public visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, December 21st. A Masonic service will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen, two brothers, William H. and J. Kenneth, and four sisters, Marjorie Pitts, Hazel Ford, Helen Sulem and Florence Clemens. Memorials to the burn unit at the Shriners' Hospital for Crippled Children are preferred.
