Bascom Alfred York was the tenth of eleven children born to Rev. R. Brantley York (1805-1891) and his second wife Mary Wells Lineberry (1819-1910). He was born at the York Collegiate Institute, which his father had founded in 1856.

The elder York was a Methodist minister, teacher, writer of text books, and founder of schools. He went blind in 1853, and subsequently, his children assisted him in his endeavors. Bascom, one of the youngest, became a minister and teacher, as well, and often traveled with his father on his preaching tours, taking the pulpit, as well. They went to Arkansas in 1878. In 1881, Bascom was a professor of Latin and Mathematics at the New Salem and Randleman High School, which his father founded that year, with his assistance. In the late 1880s, he was preaching in Stanley County, NC.

On 27 April 1881, Bascom married Euphasia Smith Moring (1855-1929). She was a daughter of Alfred Moring and his wife Elizabeth O'Kelly of Chatham County. Bascom and Euphasia had at least four children: Elizabeth M. "Bettie" York (30 Nov. 1884-20 June 1982, Mrs. Murton Marcellus Rudisill), Katie W. York (June 1891-6 March 1958, Mrs. Lawrence B. Farris), Bascom Alfred York (22 Dec. 1893-9 Oct. 1919), Hallie Aline York (27 May 1899-22 Sept 1981, Mrs. Joseph E. Reinhardt). Euphasia died in Lincolnton, NC in 1929.

Bascom died in Statesville, NC, at the age of 100 years, 6 months, 24 days.
