Rachel Layton York was the first of two children born to Rev. R. Brantley York (1805-1891) and his first wife Frances "Fannie" Sherwood (1809-1834). Her paternal grandparents were Eli York and his wife Susannah Harden, of Randolph Co.; and her maternal grandparents were Daniel Sherwood III and his second wife Rachel Layton, of Guilford Co., NC. She was named for her grandmother.

On 25 April 1851, Rachel married Thomas Franklin Elliott (1830-1892). They made their home at Sharpsburg, Iredell County. They had five children: Watson Emory Elliot (18 May 1856-20 May 1923), Laura R. Elliott (c. 1862), Brantley York Elliott (12 Dec. 1863-24 Jan. 1943), Mary L. Elliott (c. 1868), and Rev. William Franklin Elliott (7 March 1873-27 Sept. 1965).

In his autobiography, Rachel's father Rev. R. Brantley York (a Methodist minister, teacher and writer who founded many schools, among them one that later became Duke University) wrote: "On the day before Christmas we were startled with the sad news that our daughter Mrs. T. F. Elliotte, of Iredell County, had on that morning suddenly died, on that morning in the bed. If anyone should enquire how she died, we would say as she had lived a devoted Christian, we have no doubt but that she was ready when the summons came."
