Note: birth year on headstone is not correct. It is a "guesstimate". Actual birth year has been determined from the divorce petition of Douglas' parents in which Douglas' age is specifically mentioned.

Douglas Sinclair, son of George Washington Sinclair and Rachael Sharp, born in Wayne County Kentucky and moved to Harrison County Indiana by 1820. The family moved to Newton Stewart, Orange County, Indiana by 1832 where Douglas grew up. Stepmother was Lucinda Cosby.

Brother of William (Nancy Cosby), Letitia (Arison Flamingam), Sarah (Benjamin Carroll), Abigail (John Belcher), Horatio (Mary Saunders and Elizabeth Bailey), Eliza, one unknown older brother; and half-brother to James (Sarah Jane Kellems and Martha Jane McMahel), Thomas, Nancy (Joseph Brown), George W. Jr. (Mary Newkirk, Nancy Hollowell, Julie Woolsey), Ransom (Nancy Edrington, Martha M. Miley, Rose Motsch), John Abraham (Emily DeFore - Owen Co IN), UFN Letitia, Wayman (Frances Mason, Matilda Laughlin), Margaret (G Washington Alley - Hendricks Co IN) and one other unidentified male.

Cousin of Nelson Sinclair (Elizabeth Tarter) of Greene County Indiana, and the Sinclair/St. Clair families of Martin and Putnam Counties.

Married to Mary Belcher on 23 Feb 1839 in Orange County. Father of William Nelson, James Wesley and Nancy Sinclair. Douglas moved his family to Daviess County by 1860 where he is found on the 1860 census.

Definite birth year discrepancy. Douglas is named in the October Fall Term 1835 divorce papers of his parents as being "upwards of 20" years old which gives him an approximate 1815 birth year which matches the census returns, the headstone has an October 4, 1812 birth year and the age on the headstone gives Douglas an 1811 birth year. According to the census returns, his parents marriage date and the proven ages of his siblings, he would have to have been born about 1814 or 1815. There were 8 children born to the marriage as stated in Rachel's divorce papers and she put a stop to marital activity after the last child was born, as outlined in the divorce papers.

It is also very likely that his middle name was William, as is consistent with the findings of the naming of the other children in this Sinclair family. Researchers: check deed records, land holdings, court cases, newspaper archives for proof of middle name.
