died as a result of long-term effect of injuries sustained in the Civil War which included chronic lung disease which subsequently went into tuberculosis. Source: Civil War pension packet.

Served in the same unit as his brother Ransom Sinclair.

James was the son of George Washington Sinclair Sr and his second wife Lucinda Cosby. He was born during the time period that the Sinclair family was living in Harrison County Indiana near the Big Blue River.

He was the grandson of Isaac Sinclair and Letitia Douglas of Bedford County Virginia then Breckinridge County Kentucky. His mother's, Lucinda Cosby, parents are unknown except we know she was the sister of Nancy Cosby married to William Sinclair and Ransom Cosby married to Mahala Coonrod. There is also Mary Cosby who married Alfred Caddell and had daughter Angeline Cosby.

He is the brother of documented children: Thomas; Nancy who married Joseph Brown; George Washington Sinclair Jr. who married Mary Frances Newkirk, Nancy Hollowell and Julia Woolsey; Ransom Sinclair who married Nancy Edrington, Martha J Miley and Rosa Houchin; John Abraham Sinclair who married Emily DeFore; Letty Sinclair (nothing known); Wayman who married his second cousin Francis Mason and then Matilda Laughlin; and Margaret C Sinclair who married Washington T Alley.

The first five children were born out of wedlock to Lucinda Cosby while George was still married to Rachel Sharp. Source: Divorce of George and Rachel Sinclair in Harrison County, Indiana.

James married Sarah Jane Kellams/Kellums on October 21, 1850 in Dubois County and they were the parents of John Strange Sinclair/St Clair who married his step-sister Mary Elizabeth McMikel; Phebe Sinclair who married William Harrison Ferguson; Hardin Sinclair/St Clair ; Ardeleane Sinclair who married Thomas Smith; Elzora Sinclair (nothing known) and Sarah E Sinclair who died when she was three years old and is buried in this cemetery. Sarah Kellems is strongly presumed to be the daughter of James Kellems and his first wife, Sarah Rains.

His wife Sarah died in 1863 and on Feb 17, 1864 James married the widow Martha Jane (McMahel/McMickel) who had been married to George McMickel - a Civil War casualty. Martha and George were the parents of Mary Elizabeth McMikel who married her step-brother John Strange Sinclair; and of Lillian M. McMikel who married Charles Crecelius.

James and Martha were the parents of Charlotte Jane who married Charles A Harrell; Emma F who married Thomas B Dumas; and of Robert Clinton Sinclair/St Clair who married his cousin Ada Jane McMahel.

On March 15, 1877 James and Martha J. Sinclair (and Samuel Keiser/Kaiser and John Goodman) lost their land to Simon and Anna Cook in foreclosure for the sum of $232.53.

His second wife Martha Jane married a third time to Rueben Brown of Orange County Indiana and they were divorced shortly after the marriage. Martha died in 1891 in New Albany and her body was shipped to Riceville where her daughter Lilly was living. It is most likely she was then buried in the cemetery with her husband James.

James is buried in a family cemetery on private property.
