Addition: The tombstone which is on
his memorial page, IS NOT the original
one. It too has now been lost to weather
and no longer exist.
A family member visited the cemetery in the
past few months and it isn't there now.
THE DEBATE goes on, was he born in 1771
or 1772?

NEW UPDATE: THE OLD CHURCH RECORDS
YOU MUST READ THIS NEW INFORMATION

THIS RECORD CLEARLY PROVES THAT
EDWARD LONG WAS THE SON OF THOMAS
LONG. IT ALSO PROVES THIS EDWARD
LONG MARRIED JANE JONES. IT ALSO
RECORDS THEIR CHILDRENS NAMES.
A SON JAMES, GEORGE, JOHN, ISAAC
AND WILLIAM. ALSO THOMAS, EDWARD
AND AARON. THEY WERE THE PARENTS OF
8 SONS AND 3 DAUGHTERS. HOWEVER THE
RECORD DOES NOT LIST THE DAUGHTERS
NAMES.
THE RECORDS SHOW THAT ISAAC AND
GEORGE DID BECAME BAPTIST MINISTERS.
**THE MAIN THING THE CHURCH RECORD
HAS PROVEN IS, THIS ISAAC AND GEORGE
LONG LIVED AND DIED IN RACOON VALLEY,
UNION CO.,TENNESSEE. THE DEATH DATE
RECORDED IN THE CHURCH RECORDS FOR
THIS GEORGE LONG STATES HE DIED IN
1851 IN RACCOON VALLEY, UNION
COUNTY, TENNESSEE. THE RECORD GOES
INTO GREAT DETAIL ABOUT EDWARD AND
JANE'S GROWN CHILDREN.

****IT ISN'T REV. GEORGE W. LONG 1.
HE MOVED FROM VIRGINIA TO TENNESSEE,
SEVIER COUNTY, AND LIVED THERE FOR
MANY YEARS. LAND AND CENSUS RECORDS
PROVE THIS FACT. LATER, REV. GEORGE
AND 4 OF HIS SONS MOVED TO MCMINN
COUNTY, TENNESSEE.
AS EVERYONE KNOWS, OUR REV. GEORGE W.
LONG LIVED AND DIED IN MCMINN COUNTY
IN 1849 AND HE IS BURIED IN THE REV.
GEORGE W. LONG 1 CEMETERY NEAR HIS
HOME.

I PERSONALLY WAS SENT TWO PAGES FROM
THE CHURCH RECORDS TRANSCRIPTS AND IT
GOES INTO GREAT DETAIL ABOUT THOMAS LONG,
HIS SON EDWARD LONG AND ALL OF THEIR
LONG FAMILY!

UPDATE: The old Long family cemetery
in Sevier Co., Tn., has been visited
by a family researcher and some pictures
have been taken of some of the stones that
are in fair condition. Many have been broken,
half buried and some are totally
beyond repair. The cemetery is now
on private land. New pictures/info
will be added when the cemetery is
visited again when time permits and
the stones can be cleaned and
photographed. There are Atchley's, Long's
and Pate family members buried in this
old cemetery. One Long stone will need
to be cleaned and hopefully the other
piece will be found. It is for certain
a member of the Long family. It has a
M. Lo and the dates cannot be seen at
this time.
UPDATE: 2016 Another researcher
visited the Rev. Geo Long I cemetery
and once again his monument appeared?
There are several pictures which has
been taken through the last 10/12 years
and it seems the stone is somewhat
different? I have a personal email
sent long ago from a distant relative
who wrote they had replaced the stone.
She is also the first one to began
stating her belief that our Rev. Geo.
W. Long I was the son of this Edward
and Jane 'Jones' Long? Interesting!
Thinking out loud......

Rev. George Washington Long 1

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING

NOTE: There is a great debate over who the
parents of Rev. Geo. Long 1 were. The
direct descendants of Rev. Geo. have
recorded his parents and stories of his
parents for well over 200 years.
While some disagree w/this information,
the family have the names recorded in
their family branch books and also
in their family Bibles & several other
books written about the Long's and the
connecting families. The author of the
Atchley family book was a gg granddaughter
of Rev.George, her branch being Moses Long.
She took great care in her research and
sent out hundreds of forms for all the
families to fill out their own information.
The Horn book was first published in 1937.
She had gathered information for 4/5 years
before having her book published.
It was again published in 1965, being
updated somewhat. However, at that time no
one disagreed with her information! Yes there
are minor mistakes w/dates, some given names
that were used other than the ones given to her,
but it still wasn't disputed by any close family
member about ggg grandfather's parents.
I have researched for many years,
I'm a Long and have been in contact with all
of the descendants from the branches of
Rev. George & Nancy 'Elizabeth' children. They
have recorded John and Mary, many not ever
hearing or seeing the Horn book.
The book information was given to her by more
than one member of the Long family, she herself
was a Long. Rev. Robert H. Long sent her information,
as did many many others. Moses Long still had a
SON living at the time the first book was being
written. He wrote a lovely letter to Mrs. Maud
'Long' Horn, his great niece. In fact he wrote
two letters of stories to her for the book.
He didn't DISAGREE with the information about
his grandparents, John and Mary. Maud 'Long' Horn
was born in 1898. The Atchley family have
also recorded the information, having married
into the Long family that lived in Tennessee. No
one has made up these parents names of Rev.George's
parents. Ask the question, why would they? Also the
stories handed down through all of the generations
to present. There are at least four or more books that
have been printed about the Long family. And some
of the branches of the 10 children of Rev.Geo. have
also written their family's book. Moses Long,
John Long 11, Maples Long and Isaac Long's
families have written a book about their branches.
Some of the grandchildren of Rev. Geo. and Nancy have
written their branches family history, starting w/John
and Mary.
The information can be decided by each researcher.

Rev. George Long I was the son of John Long 1
& Mary 'Haynes.' He was married to Nancy
Elizabeth "Maples."
The grandchildren of Nancy Elizabeth Maples
Long, called her Nancy! Many were old enough
to remember & knew their grandmother quite
well. This isn't a mistake?
The 82nd Long family reunion has taken place.
They hold it each year, the oldest one attending
was 92 years old. He was a great great grandson of
Rev. George and Nancy. He had never missed a
reunion in his lifetime. They have never heard
of an Edward or Jane? Never seen the Horn book, but
they know the stories of John and Mary. We have
lost one last year, a great great grandson,
he listed John and Mary, he's from Isaac Long's
branch. We also still have a great great grand
daughter living, from Maples Long's branch.
Update: She has now passed, 2015
They have and do list John and Mary. Again,
you can agree to disagree, that's the privilage of
researchers. Thank you for your time, Phyllis 'Long' Rhodes, ggg granddaughter of Rev.George W. Long 1.

To this union ten children were born
in order:
Moses, James, George II, John II, Nancy,
Maples, Elizabeth, Levi, Isaac, and Ruth.

Rev. George Long I was a minister of
the Gospel, Primitive Baptist faith,
having entered the Gospel mission during
1799. He was a minister of the Gospel for
many years. He had traveled a distance to
preach a revival and on his way home, he
became very ill. He got off his horse and
was lying against a tree when friends came
by and saw him on the side of the road. They
stopped to help him and were trying to get
him back home to his family, but sadly he
passed away. His last words were: "Ring the
Old Gospel Bell."
******************************
NOTE: The story told about Rev.George has
also been brought to the attention of
researchers that it can't be the story
of his death? All of his grown children
and several of his grandchildren
were living when he died. Several of the
grandchildren were married w/children
at the time. Once again, this is a true story.
This story has been passed down through Rev.
George's grown children and his grandchildren
that lived in Tennessee at the time of his
death.
*****************************
NOTE:
Rev.George W. Long I son's; Moses, George 11
John II, and Levi named a son John.
His 3 daughters, Nancy, Elizabeth and Ruth
all named a son John.
His son, Maples, named a son George
Washington III, and a son with the
middle name of John. His son James
also named a son George Washington Long.
Grandchildren named son's, John.
There are 30 Long's with the given
name of John from the direct branches
of Rev. George W. Long I family tree.
******************************
A picture recently found of Synthia 'Long'
with 5 generations of her family line,
was taken in 1915. Synthia was 87 years
old at the time. Synthia was born in
1828 in Sevier Co., Tn.,and died in 1925
at the age of 97.
******************************
Later when the picture was placed in the local
newspaper, the caption read as the
following in both of the paragraphs
below:
These ladies are members of the following
early Boone Co., families: Long, Maples,
Atchley, Burchfield, Moore, Shaddox,
Jones, and Villines.
Synthia Long's parents were Maples Long
and Mahala Atchley Long. Her grandparents
were George Long and Nancy Maples and
Great Grandparents were John Long and Mary Haynes.
******************************
NOTE: Regardless when the picture was put
into the paper, the ariticle still has
her lineage listed. No one made the informtaion
or names up at the time? Again there
would be no reason for the Long family to
list the names of John and Mary if they
aren't correct! The paper didn't make it up!?

This is our Long family lineage recorded
by Cynthia 'Long' (1828) who lived and
knew the family history. Cynthia wasn't
the only or the oldest grandchild that
had told the story about their grand-
father's death. She also told her family
about John and Mary as his parents. She
was 21 years old, married for 5 years and
had a child at the age of 4 at the time of
her grandfather's death. She knew her grand-
parents very well.
CYNTHA DIED BEFORE THE HORN BOOK WAS WRITTEN!
She had a grandson who lived to be 108. He
had written about the Long lineage and
also made an audio recording about their
lives and names, John and Mary. He has
recorded their names, told to him by
his mother and his grandmother, Cyntha.
Cyntha also had seen this, as did her
sibblings, in the old family Bible that
her father, Maples had. Sadly, the
Bible was destroyed by a house fire.
The family's word is our record. They
did not lie about seeing the record in the
old family Bible!!!!

Nancy 'Elizabeth' Maples Long is buried
here in the cemetery. It has been told by
the family members who lived in Tennessee,
that she and their son, George II, are
buried side by side, a short distance from
Rev. George.
A granddaughter and a great granddaughter
of Rev. George and Elizabeth are buried
here also. All the graves had stones at
one time according to family members who
had visited the little cemetery.
However through the years and weather,
all is lost but GGG Grandfather's, Rev.
George W. Long 1. It's not known how it
has survived or if it has been redone?
Since 5 years ago when I first ask for
a picture of his tombstone be placed on
his memorial page,(first time it was seen)
it has rapidly been deteriorating. At the
rate it has deteriorated, I am not sure how
the present one would be the original?
When it was visited by a family member
& her brother several years ago, all of
the stones were down at that time.

UPDATE: An email was sent recently which the
person states they had visited this
cemetery and the stone had been re-done at
some point in the past. This was in 2011.
Another person visited the little cemetery
in 2013 and their picture showed
it had deteriorated a great deal since the
first was taken and posted on this memorial.
UPDATE: 2015
Latest news reported by a distant family
researcher visiting the area and cemetery
reports there isn't a stone for Rev. George W.
Long 1 now. He did not see or find any stones?

UPDATE: New recorded history found
on a very old old family tree, records
JOHN AND MARY! These were in Rhoda 'Long'
Atchley's personal belongings. Rhoda
being the granddaughter of Rev.George.
There are new found original documents,
pictures, cards and letters that
belonged to Rhoda 'Long' Atchley
and Claiborn Atchley. There are many
things from and about the Longs/Maples/Moore
and Atchley family members. They date back
as far as the late 1800's, early 1900's.
More will be added at a later date when
possible.

Info by Phyllis 'Long' a GGG Granddaughter
