Nancy was the daughter of the cemetery's founders, James and Ursula (Sweeney) Gunn. The family moved to Morgan County about 1830, where Nancy married Porter Story on 12 March 1840. Nancy's and Porter's home was west across the road from the cemetery.

They were the parents of ten children: George Van Buren, who married Martha Mitchell; John Isaac, who married Sarah Elizabeth Spencer; James Parish, married to Martha Hannah Spires; William Morgan and Mary Emmaline who died young; Malinda, second wife of Watson Grossman; Francis Walker, married to Mary Elizabeth Million; Wesley Green, married first to Mary Camm, then Loumyra Robb; Hannah Ursula, first wife of Augustus Seymour; and Julia Ann, married to Philip Fry Spencer. George, William, Mary, Wesley and Julia are all buried in this cemetery.

Nancy inherited the ground where the cemetery is located from her parents, and deeded it to the Mt. Zion Methodist Church, which still holds the title.
