Reuben was a son of James and Ursula Jane (Sweeney) Gunn. He was named for his grandfather, Reuben Gunn, who landed at Charleston, South Carolina about 1754. The senior Reuben was born somewhere in Europe, and served in the American Revolution.

Reuben Walker married Julia E. Guthrie 16 March 1855 in Greene County, Illinois. They had at least three children:
Mary, who married John A. Gunn who was also her first cousin's son; William R., husband of Emily Brell; and Martha Emily, wife of B.F. Gray.
