Alexander was the eldest son of the founders of the cemetery, James and Ursula (Sweeney) Gunn. After their father's death, he and his sister Nancy (Gunn) Story formally deeded this cemetery to the Mt. Zion Methodist Church.

Rev. Gunn was a Methodist minister for 30 years, and also a member of the Masonic Lodge.

He married Mary "Polly" Wright 15 December 1831 in Morgan County, IL. Their children were: George M., Margaret, Sarah Caroline, James A., Ursula Jane, Martha D., John W., William A., Jesse W., a stillborn daughter, Mary M., Caleb W., and another unnamed daughter. Several of these children are buried in this cemetery.
