Joseph was the youngest child of James and Ursula Jane (Sweeney) Gunn, and a brother to Abisha James Gunn who is also buried in this cemetery.

Joseph was a Sgt. in Co. E, 58th Illinois Infantry in the Civil War. He enlisted at Jacksonville, IL, and was discharged at Montgomery, Alabama. He was a farmer who lived in Wrights Township of Morgan County when he enlisted. His military record describes him as 6'2" tall with dark hair, gray eyes, and a florid complexion.

He married Margaret E. Fisher 9 August 1855 in Morgan County. They were parents of three daughters: Susan Alice, who married George L. Mefford; and two younger girls who died in childhood: Sarah and Lillie.
