Francis was one of the younger sons of Porter and Nancy Jane (Gunn) Story. He married Mary Elizabeth Million 10 April 1881 in Morgan County. They had two sons: Hugh Ernest, who was 18 months old when he died; and Ira Porter, who first married Nettie Adelia Osborne. Their two babies died at birth. After Nettie's death in 1952, Ira married a widow, Florence Ehrich.
