Malinda was the second daughter born to Porter and Nancy Jane (Gunn) Story. She married a widower, Watson Grossman 4 September 1873 in Morgan County, Illinois. They had one child in Morgan County, Oscar Connor Grossman, who later married Bertha Margaret Carroll.

The family, including Watson's two children from his marriage to Mary Elizabeth Rimbey, Ada A. and Nancy Elizabeth moved to Nebraska. Six more children were born there: Morgan Francis, husband of Alpha M. Oldham; Ira Leroy, who was only a toddler when he died; Julia Effel; Philip Augustus; Chester Harry; and Clyde Story Grossman.
