LEHIGH - Averill West, 89, of Lehigh, passed away Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines.
Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, at Bruce’s Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gordon Watson of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of service. The VFW Post No. 1856 will provide military honors. Burial will take place at a later date. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
Averill “Bud” “Shorty” Woodrow West, the son of James and Laura (Rudy) West, was born March 13, 1913, in rural Lehigh. He received his education from the country schools in the Lehigh area. He was married to Olive Campbell on Jan. 2, 1933, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. On Aug. 17, 1944, he entered the United States Navy, serving his country in World War II. After an honorable discharge on April 21, 1945, he returned to the Fort Dodge area. He worked in the maintenance department of New Idea for over 26 years. After New Idea closed, he then worked for Franklin Manufacturing on the assembly line.
Averill is survived by his children and their spouses, Nancy and David Behrens of Colleen (sic), Texas; Mary Ann Ebberson of Davenport, Iowa; Karen and Ronald Genco of Bellevue, Iowa; Dennis and Roxanne West of San Bernardino, Calif.; Wendell and Joanie West of Fort Dodge, and Wendy and Dan Kozma of Davenport. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Olive on Dec. 23, 1994, an infant daughter, Averilla; three sons, Charles, James and Ronald, four sisters, Dolly Ely, Nora Pratt, Bridget Andrews and Rose White; and one son-in-law, Merle Ebberson.
